Zana Fraillon biography

Zana Fraillon is an Australian author known for her works in children’s and young adult literature. She has written several novels that address themes such as displacement, resilience, and social justice. Fraillon’s notable books include The Bone Sparrow (2016), which tells the story of a Rohingya refugee boy in an Australian detention centre. This novel was shortlisted for the 2017 Carnegie Medal and won the Amnesty CILIP Honour. It also received the ABIA Book of the Year for Older Children and the Readings Young Adult Book Prize.

Her other works include The Lost Soul Atlas (2020), The Ones That Disappeared (2017), and Wisp: A Story of Hope (2018), the latter illustrated by Grahame Baker-Smith. The Ones That Disappeared was shortlisted for the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards and the CBCA Book of the Year Awards. Wisp: A Story of Hope was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal.

Fraillon’s books have been published by Hachette Australia and Orion Children’s Books. Her writing has been translated into multiple languages. She has received recognition from organisations such as Amnesty International for her contribution to literature addressing human rights issues. In 2021, The Lost Soul Atlas was shortlisted for the CBCA Book of the Year: Older Readers.

Fraillon’s novel The Bone Sparrow was adapted for the stage by Pilot Theatre and York Theatre Royal, premiering in 2022.
