Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Ted Hughes was an English poet and author, known for his significant contribution to children’s literature as well as poetry for adults. He was born in Mytholmroyd, West Yorkshire, and educated at Pembroke College, Cambridge. Hughes published his first collection of poems, The Hawk in the Rain, in 1957. He served as Poet Laureate from 1984 until his death in 1998.
Hughes wrote several books for children, including The Iron Man (1968), which has been published in the United States as The Iron Giant. This novel has been adapted for stage and screen, including the 1999 animated film The Iron Giant. Other children’s works by Hughes include The Iron Woman (1993), How the Whale Became (1963), and Tales of the Early World (1988).
Hughes received numerous awards for his writing. He was awarded the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize in 1985 for What is the Truth? and the Signal Poetry Award for Season Songs in 1976. In 1998, he was appointed to the Order of Merit.
His final poetry collection, Birthday Letters (1998), won the Whitbread Book of the Year and the Forward Poetry Prize. Hughes’s work for children and adults remains widely studied and published.
