Sylvia Long is an American illustrator and author known for her work in children’s literature. She is particularly recognised for her detailed and nature-inspired illustrations. Long has illustrated numerous picture books, often collaborating with other authors. Among her most notable works is the illustrated edition of Hush Little Baby, which presents a classic lullaby with new visual interpretations. Her illustrations are characterised by intricate line work and a focus on the natural world, often featuring animals and plants.
In addition to Hush Little Baby, Long has illustrated books such as An Egg Is Quiet and A Seed Is Sleepy, both written by Dianna Hutts Aston. These books introduce young readers to scientific concepts through accessible text and detailed artwork. Long’s illustrations have been published by Chronicle Books and other major publishers.
Her work on An Egg Is Quiet received recognition as an ALA Notable Children’s Book in 2007.
