Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Steve Williams is a children’s nonfiction author and science teacher. He studied Marine Biology and Applied Zoology at the University of Wales and spent eight years at sea before training as a teacher.
With Catherine Barr, Williams co-writes the Story of… series for Frances Lincoln Children’s Books. The series uses illustrated narrative nonfiction to introduce younger readers to science, history, invention, evolution, space, climate and the natural world. Amy Husband illustrates the titles in the series named here.
The first title, The Story of Life: A First Book About Evolution, was published by Frances Lincoln Children’s Books and introduces the development of life on Earth for younger children. Barr and Williams also wrote The Story of Space: A First Book About Our Universe, The Story of People: A First Book About Humankind, The Story of Inventions: A First Book About World-Changing Discoveries and The Story of Climate Change: A First Book About How We Can Help Save Our Planet.
The Story of Conservation: A First Book About Protecting Nature was published by Frances Lincoln Children’s Books on 3 August 2023, with text by Catherine Barr and Steve Williams and illustrations by Amy Husband. The Story of Dinosaurs: A First Book About Prehistoric Beasts was published by Frances Lincoln Children’s Books on 8 August 2024.
