Steve Jenkins biography

Steve Jenkins was an American children’s author and illustrator known for nonfiction picture books about animals, the natural world, Earth and space. He studied graphic design at North Carolina State University and later worked in graphic design before moving into children’s books.

His first book, Duck’s Breath and Mouse Pie: A Collection of Animal Superstitions, was published in 1994. He went on to create more than 80 books for young readers, many of them using his cut- and torn-paper collage technique.

Jenkins wrote and illustrated books including Hottest, Coldest, Highest, Deepest, Down, Down, Down, Actual Size, Eye to Eye, and The Animal Book. He also collaborated with Robin Page on titles including What Do You Do with a Tail Like This? and How to Clean a Hippopotamus.

What Do You Do with a Tail Like This? received a Caldecott Honor in 2004, and The Top of the World: Climbing Mount Everest won the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for Nonfiction in 1999.
