Simon Kuestenmacher is a geographer, author and data communicator. He is Co-founder and Director of The Demographics Group, a consultancy established in 2017 with Bernard Salt to provide analysis of demographic, consumer and social trends for business and government. Earlier in his career he worked as a consultant at KPMG Australia.
Kuestenmacher holds degrees in geography from universities in Berlin and Melbourne. Alongside advisory work, he presents on population change, workforce dynamics and urban trends, and writes regularly on data-led topics. Publisher materials also note his column for The Australian newspaper.
As an author, he curates accessible, infographic-style introductions to geography and global patterns. His first trade book in English, Random Maps: The World in Over 100 Unusual Maps (OH Editions/Headline, 11 November 2021), presents thematic cartography to explain everything from settlement patterns to climate and culture. He followed this with Marvellous Maps: Our Changing World in 40 Amazing Maps (Hachette Children’s Group, 6 June 2023), an illustrated nonfiction title for younger readers.
