Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Sandra Dieckmann is an illustrator, author and maker. She was born in northern Germany, and her creative work is inspired by nature, wildlife, drifting thoughts and dreams.
Her first book as both author and illustrator was Leaf. Leaf was nominated for the Kate Greenaway Medal, longlisted for the Klaus Flugge Prize, and shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and the AOI World Illustration Award.
The Dog That Ate the World was her second picture book. It was published by Flying Eye Books on 21 August 2018, and the story follows animals who must work together after an enormous dog swallows them one by one.
Her Hachette Children’s Group books include Waiting for Wolf, a picture book about bereavement, and The Magic Feather, a picture book about finding a personal spark. She illustrated Portrait of an Artist: Frida Kahlo, written by Lucy Brownridge.
Grimms’ Fairy Tales, written and illustrated by the Brothers Grimm and Sandra Dieckmann, was published by Candlewick on 23 September 2025. The 176-page collection contains twenty fairy tales and is intended for children aged 4 to 8.
