Ronda Armitage is a New Zealand-born author known for her contributions to children’s literature. She trained as a teacher and began writing stories for children while working in education. Armitage is best known for the Lighthouse Keeper series, illustrated by her husband, David Armitage. The first book in the series, The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch, was published in 1977 by Scholastic and won the Esther Glen Award in 1978. The series has expanded to include several titles, such as The Lighthouse Keeper’s Cat, The Lighthouse Keeper’s Rescue, and The Lighthouse Keeper’s Picnic.
In addition to the Lighthouse Keeper books, Armitage has written other children’s titles, including A Very Strange Creature, Small Knight and George, and Queen of the Night. Her works have been published by major publishers such as Scholastic and Walker Books. Armitage’s books have been translated into multiple languages and are widely used in schools and libraries.
Ronda Armitage received the Esther Glen Award from the Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa for The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch in 1978.
