Robert C. O’Brien was an American author and journalist, known for his contributions to children’s and young adult literature. His full name was Robert Leslie Carroll Conly, but he wrote under the pen name Robert C. O’Brien. He worked as a writer and editor for National Geographic magazine.
O’Brien’s first novel, The Silver Crown, was published in 1968. He is best known for Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, published in 1971. This novel won the Newbery Medal in 1972, awarded by the American Library Association for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. The book was later adapted into the animated film The Secret of NIMH in 1982.
O’Brien also wrote A Report from Group 17 (1972) and Z for Zachariah (published posthumously in 1974). Z for Zachariah received a 1976 Edgar Award for Best Juvenile Mystery from the Mystery Writers of America. The novel was completed by his wife and daughter after his death.
O’Brien’s works have been published by Atheneum Books. His writing is noted for its imaginative plots and exploration of complex themes. Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH remains his most recognised work, with enduring popularity in children’s literature. Z for Zachariah was adapted into a BBC television film in 1984 and a feature film in 2015.
