Robert Graves biography

Robert Graves was a British poet, novelist, critic, and classicist. He attended Charterhouse School and later studied at St John’s College, Oxford. Graves served as an officer in the First World War, an experience that influenced much of his early poetry and prose.

Graves published his first volume of poems, Over the Brazier, in 1916. He is widely known for his historical novels, particularly I, Claudius (1934) and its sequel Claudius the God (1934), both of which have remained in print since publication. His other notable works include Good-Bye to All That (1929), an autobiographical account of his early life and war experiences, and The White Goddess (1948), a study of poetic myth-making.

Graves wrote more than 140 works across poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. His poetry collections include Fairies and Fusiliers (1917) and Collected Poems (1948). He also produced translations and studies of classical literature, such as The Greek Myths (1955) and The Golden Fleece (1944).

Graves received the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry in 1968. His novel I, Claudius was adapted for television by the BBC in 1976. Graves’s influence extends across twentieth-century literature, with his works translated into numerous languages. He died in 1985.
