Rob Sanders biography

Rob Sanders is a children’s author and former teacher whose picture books span fiction and narrative nonfiction. His work for young readers often explores civil rights, activism and LGBTQ+ history through accessible, picture-book storytelling.

Notable nonfiction titles include Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag (2018), Stonewall: A Building. An Uprising. A Revolution. (2019), The Fighting Infantryman: The Story of Albert D. J. Cashier, Transgender Civil War Soldier (2020), Mayor Pete: The Story of Pete Buttigieg (2020), Two Grooms on a Cake: The Story of America’s First Gay Wedding, Stitch by Stitch: Cleve Jones and the AIDS Memorial Quilt, The Mother of a Movement: Jeanne Manford – Ally, Activist, and Co-founder of PFLAG, and A Song for the Unsung: Bayard Rustin, the Man Behind the 1963 March on Washington (with Carole Boston Weatherford).

His earlier and general-interest picture books include Rodzilla (2017), the Ruby Rose titles, Outer Space Bedtime Race, Ball & Balloon (2019) and seasonal title Cowboy Christmas. Recent works include Queer and Fearless, Blood Brothers, We Are a Class, Between You and Me and Book Comes Home: A Banned Book’s Journey.

Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag was published by Random House Books for Young Readers in April 2018.
