Rebecca Giggs is a writer from Perth, Australia, whose work focuses on how people think and feel about animals during ecological crisis and technological change. Fathoms: The World in the Whale is Giggs’s first book. It is a work of nonfiction about whales, ecological change, whale culture, human technology and the condition of the oceans. The book was published by Simon & Schuster on 28 July 2020 in a 352-page edition with ISBN 9781982120719.

Fathoms: The World in the Whale won the 2021 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction. The book was also a finalist for the 2020 Kirkus Prize for Nonfiction and a finalist for the PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award.
