Poonam Mistry is a British illustrator and author acclaimed for her intricate, pattern-rich artwork that draws deeply from nature and her Indian heritage. Her distinctive style combines traditional hand-drawn techniques with digital enhancements, resulting in visually striking illustrations that have captivated readers of all ages.
Raised in the UK, Mistry graduated in 2010 with a degree in Graphic Design and Illustration from the University of Hertfordshire. Her artistic sensibilities were shaped by a childhood immersed in Indian fabrics, Kalamkari textiles, Madhubani paintings, and hand-painted ornaments. These influences are evident in her work, which often explores themes from folklore and Hindu mythology, rendered through detailed patterns and vibrant colours.
Mistry’s notable collaborations include a series of picture books with author Chitra Soundar, such as You’re Safe With Me (2018), You’re Snug With Me (2018), and You’re Strong With Me (2019). These books have been praised for their lyrical storytelling and rich, textured illustrations. You’re Safe With Me was shortlisted for the 2019 CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal, recognising outstanding illustration in children’s literature.
In 2019, Mistry authored and illustrated How the Stars Came to Be, a modern folk tale that reimagines the origin of stars through the story of a fisherman’s daughter. The book showcases her signature style and storytelling abilities, earning a shortlist nomination for the 2021 CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal. Her 2023 release, The Midnight Panther, continues her exploration of identity and belonging through a fable set in the rainforest.
Beyond her books, Mistry has worked with various organisations, including American Express, ITV, BP Oil, Ogilvy, and the Commonwealth Education Trust. She remains active in the literary community, engaging with readers and promoting the importance of visual storytelling in children’s education.
