Petr Horáček, born on 30th June 1967 in Prague, Czechoslovakia, is a Czech-born British author and illustrator renowned for his contributions to children’s literature. He studied at the High School of Art in Prague from the age of 15 to 19, followed by two years at a state design agency. In 1988, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Art in Prague, where he earned a Master of Fine Art degree in 1994. The same year, he moved to England, where he married and began his family.
Horáček’s career in children’s books commenced after the birth of his first daughter. His debut works, Strawberries Are Red and What Is Black and White?, were published in 2001 by Walker Books. That same year, he received the Books for Children Newcomer Award. His illustrative style often features animals as central characters, conveying themes of friendship, love, and belonging. Notable works include Silly Suzy Goose, Butterfly Butterfly: A Book of Colors, and Puffin Peter.
Horáček has been shortlisted twice for the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal. His books have been translated into multiple languages and have received various accolades in the UK, USA, and the Netherlands. He frequently engages with audiences through school visits, delivering talks and conducting workshops that encourage creativity and artistic expression among young readers.
