Pamela Butchart is a Scottish children’s author and secondary school philosophy teacher, renowned for her humorous and imaginative stories that resonate with young readers. Born and raised in Dundee, she pursued an MA in Philosophy at the University of Dundee, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the University of Edinburgh.
Before embarking on her writing career, Butchart held various jobs, including teaching basketball in the United States and working as a phlebotomist. Her transition to writing was inspired by a gift from her fiancé—a book on how to write for children—which led her to pen her debut novel, Baby Aliens Got My Teacher! in 2014.
Butchart’s work has garnered significant acclaim. Her book The Spy Who Loved School Dinners won the 2015 Blue Peter Book Award for Best Story, while My Head Teacher is a Vampire Rat secured the 2016 Red House Children’s Book Award. In 2023, A Monster Ate My Packed Lunch! received the Laugh Out Loud Book Award (Lollies) for the 6–8 age category.
She has authored several popular series, including the Baby Aliens series, illustrated by Thomas Flintham; the Wigglesbottom Primary series, illustrated by Becka Moor; and the Pugly series, illustrated by Gemma Correll. Butchart has also contributed to Enid Blyton’s Secret Seven series, writing two new adventures: Mystery of the Skull (2018) and Mystery of the Theatre Ghost (2019).
In addition to her novels, Butchart has written picture books such as Never Tickle a Tiger, illustrated by Marc Boutavant, which was shortlisted for the Scottish Children’s Book Awards in 2016. Her recent works include The Great Crisp Robbery (2024) and My Teacher is a Diamond Thief (2025), both part of the Baby Aliens series.
Butchart continues to teach philosophy at a secondary school in Dundee, where she lives with her husband, their son, and their two cats, Bear and Carlos.
