Norman Hunter was a British author best known for creating the character Professor Branestawm. He published the first book in the series, The Incredible Adventures of Professor Branestawm, in 1933 with illustrations by W. Heath Robinson. The series features the eccentric inventor Professor Branestawm and became notable for its inventive humour and wordplay.
Hunter wrote several sequels, including Professor Branestawm’s Treasure Hunt (1937) and Professor Branestawm’s Great Revolution (1972). The books have been illustrated by various artists, including George Adamson and Heath Robinson. Hunter’s works have been published by several major publishers, including John Lane and The Bodley Head.
In addition to the Professor Branestawm series, Hunter wrote books on conjuring and puzzles, such as Successful Conjuring for Amateurs (1923) and New and Easy Magic Tricks (1954). His books have remained in print for decades and have been adapted for television and radio.
Norman Hunter’s The Incredible Adventures of Professor Branestawm was included in the BBC’s 2019 list of the 100 most influential children’s books. The Professor Branestawm series continues to be recognised as a significant contribution to British children’s literature.
