Nick Dragotta biography

Nick Dragotta is an American comic-book artist and writer whose work has been published by Marvel, DC and Image Comics. His Marvel credits include Fantastic Four, FF, X-Statix, Captain America, Spider-Man and X-Men. His work with writer Jonathan Hickman on FF preceded one of their best-known collaborations, the creator-owned series East of West.

East of West, written by Hickman and illustrated by Dragotta, launched through Image Comics in 2013. The science-fiction western ran for 45 issues, concluding in 2019, and follows a radically altered America in which the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse play a central role. The complete series was collected in the East of West: The End Times compendium in 2025.

Dragotta is also a creator of Howtoons, a comic-based series combining stories with practical science, engineering and making projects for children. His other creator-owned work includes Ghost Cage, a three-issue Image Comics series which he co-wrote with Caleb Goellner and illustrated. The collected edition was published in 2022.

In 2024, Dragotta became the principal artist on DC’s Absolute Batman, written by Scott Snyder and coloured by Frank Martin. The series reimagines Bruce Wayne without the inherited wealth, mansion and traditional support network associated with the character, with Dragotta responsible for the new Batman’s distinctive visual design. Absolute Batman won the 2026 Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series.
