Gaiman’s first notable work was the graphic novel series The Sandman, published by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint from 1989 to 1996. The series received critical acclaim and won numerous awards, including the World Fantasy Award for Best Short Story in 1991 for the issue “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Gaiman has also written extensively for children and young adults. His children’s book Coraline (2002) won the Hugo, Nebula, and Bram Stoker Awards for Best Novella. Another popular children’s book, The Graveyard Book (2008), won the Newbery Medal and the Carnegie Medal, making Gaiman the first author to win both awards for the same work.
