Nadine Brandes biography

Nadine Brandes is an American author of young adult fantasy, historical fantasy and speculative fiction. Her books include the Out of Time trilogy, Fawkes, Romanov, Wishtress and The Nightmare Virus. She began writing the Out of Time series in 2010, and the first novel was subsequently acquired by Enclave Publishing.

Her debut, A Time to Die, was published by Enclave Publishing in 2014 and became the first of three books featuring Parvin Blackwater. It was followed by A Time to Speak and A Time to Rise. A Time to Die won the American Christian Fiction Writers Carol Award for Speculative Fiction in 2015.

Brandes later signed with Thomas Nelson, part of HarperCollins Christian Publishing, for Fawkes and Romanov. Published in 2018, Fawkes reimagines the Gunpowder Plot through a fantasy story involving Thomas Fawkes and a supernatural Stone Plague. Romanov, published in 2019, offers a fantasy interpretation of the final period in the life of Anastasia Romanov and her family. Fawkes won the 2019 Carol Award for Young Adult fiction, with Romanov taking the same award in 2020.

Her standalone fantasy Wishtress, published by Thomas Nelson in 2022, won the 2023 Carol Award for Young Adult fiction, making Brandes a four-time Carol Award winner. She returned to Enclave Publishing with The Nightmare Virus in 2024, a YA speculative novel about a virus that traps infected people within a shared dream world. The Nightmare Virus was named a finalist for the 2025 Carol Award in the Young Adult category.
