Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Michaela Dias-Hayes is a British author and illustrator known for her work in children’s literature. She studied Printed Textiles at Winchester School of Art and has a background in teaching art and textiles. Dias-Hayes draws on her heritage and experiences to inform her creative projects, often focusing on themes of identity and belonging.
Her debut picture book as both author and illustrator is Sunflower Sisters, published by Andersen Press in 2022. The story explores friendship and cultural identity, following two girls who celebrate their similarities and differences. Dias-Hayes’s illustrations are recognised for their vibrant use of colour and pattern, reflecting her interest in textiles and design.
In addition to her own writing, Dias-Hayes has illustrated books for other authors, including My Hair by Hannah Lee, published by Faber & Faber in 2019. Her work has been noted for its positive representation of diverse characters and its appeal to young readers.
In 2022, Sunflower Sisters was published by Andersen Press.
