Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Margaret Wild is a children’s author who was born in South Africa. She has written more than forty books for children, including Let the Celebrations Begin!, illustrated by Julie Vivas, and Jinx. Her work includes picture books and teen fiction, with One Night published as a 240-page ebook by Laurel Leaf on 4 March 2009 for readers aged 12 and above.
Wild has collaborated with illustrators including Ron Brooks and Freya Blackwood. Fox, illustrated by Ron Brooks, was published by Kane Miller on 1 October 2001 and received the Australian Children’s Book Council’s Picture Book of the Year award. The book follows Dog, Magpie and Fox in a story about friendship, loyalty and temptation.
The Treasure Box, written by Wild and illustrated by Freya Blackwood, is a 40-page picture book for ages 5 to 8. Its story follows Peter and his father after the bombing of a library, as they flee with a surviving book kept in a treasure box. The Treasure Box was published by Candlewick on 15 June 2021.
