Mairi Hedderwick is a Scottish author and illustrator, best known for her work in children’s literature. She was born in Gourock, Scotland, and attended Edinburgh College of Art, where she studied mural painting and ceramics. After her studies, Hedderwick moved to the Isle of Coll in the Inner Hebrides, which would later inspire much of her creative work.
Hedderwick is the creator of the Katie Morag series, which centres on a young girl living on a fictional Scottish island. The first book, Katie Morag Delivers the Mail, was published by The Bodley Head in 1984. The series is noted for its depiction of island life and its detailed illustrations, all created by Hedderwick herself. Over the years, she has written and illustrated numerous titles in the Katie Morag series, which have become staples in UK primary schools and libraries.
In addition to the Katie Morag books, Hedderwick has produced a range of other works, including picture books, travel writing, and illustrated diaries. Her travel books often reflect her experiences living in and travelling around Scotland, with a particular focus on the Hebrides. She has also illustrated books by other authors and contributed to educational publications.
Hedderwick’s work has been recognised with several awards and honours. In 2003, she received the Scottish Arts Council Award for her contribution to children’s literature. Her books have been adapted for television, and the Katie Morag stories were developed into a BBC television series.
In 2013, Hedderwick published Katie Morag and the Dancing Class, continuing her long-running series and further exploring the character’s adventures on the fictional Isle of Struay.
