Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Lisa Heathfield is a British author known for her young adult fiction. Before becoming a writer, she worked as an English teacher. Heathfield’s debut novel, Seed, was published by Egmont in 2015. The book explores life within a cult and follows the experiences of a teenage girl named Pearl.
Following her first novel, Heathfield wrote Paper Butterflies, published by Egmont in 2016. This book tells the story of June, a girl facing challenges both at home and in the wider world. In 2017, Heathfield released Flight of a Starling, also with Egmont, which centres on two sisters growing up in a travelling circus.
Heathfield’s work has been recognised by several award shortlists. Seed was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize in 2016. Paper Butterflies was shortlisted for the YA Book Prize in 2017. Her novels often address complex themes relevant to young adults, including identity, family, and resilience.
In 2019, Heathfield published I Am Not a Number with Egmont, a novel set in a dystopian future. Her books are published in the UK by Egmont, and she continues to write for young adult readers. A notable milestone in her career is the publication of I Am Not a Number in 2019.
