Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Laura Wood is a British author known for her children’s and young adult fiction. She won the Montegrappa Scholastic Prize for New Children’s Writing in 2014 for her debut novel, Poppy Pym and the Pharaoh’s Curse, which was published by Scholastic in 2015. The book is the first in the Poppy Pym series, followed by Poppy Pym and the Double Jinx (2016) and Poppy Pym and the Smuggler’s Secret (2017).
Wood has also written standalone young adult novels, including Under a Dancing Star (2019), A Sky Painted Gold (2018), and Vote for Effie (2019). A Sky Painted Gold was shortlisted for the YA Book Prize in 2019. Her novel Under a Dancing Star was shortlisted for the Romantic Novelists’ Association’s Romantic Novel of the Year Award in 2020.
In addition to her fiction, Wood holds a doctorate in English Literature from the University of Warwick. Her books are published by Scholastic and Bloomsbury. In 2022, she published The Agency for Scandal with Scholastic.
