Kwame Alexander (born 21 August 1968) is an American poet, educator, and author renowned for his contributions to children’s and young adult literature. His work often blends poetry and storytelling to explore themes of family, identity, and resilience.

Born in Manhattan, New York, Alexander grew up in Virginia. He studied at Virginia Tech, where a writing class with poet Nikki Giovanni inspired him to pursue a literary career. Initially embarking on premedical studies, he shifted his focus to writing and education.

Alexander’s breakthrough came with The Crossover (2014), a novel in verse about twin brothers and their passion for basketball. The book received the 2015 Newbery Medal and a Coretta Scott King Author Honor. It was later adapted into a Disney+ television series, which won the Outstanding Young Teen Series award at the 2023 Children’s and Family Emmy Awards.

His other notable works include Booked (2016), Rebound (2018), and The Door of No Return (2022), a historical verse novel set in 19th-century Ghana. Alexander has also co-authored Becoming Muhammad Ali (2020) with James Patterson, chronicling the early life of the boxing legend.

In addition to fiction, Alexander has written picture books such as The Undefeated (2019), illustrated by Kadir Nelson, which won the Caldecott Medal and a Newbery Honor. He has also edited anthologies like Out of Wonder: Poems Celebrating Poets (2017), which received the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award.

Alexander is the founder of the Bookinaday programme, which introduces children to writing and publishing. He has made over 3,000 appearances at schools, literary festivals, and other events, promoting literacy and the joy of reading.
