Kevin Henkes is an American author and illustrator known for his work in children’s literature. He has written and illustrated numerous picture books and novels for young readers. Henkes is recognised for his distinctive illustration style and his ability to address themes relevant to children’s experiences.
Henkes’s picture books often feature animal characters and explore topics such as family, friendship, and self-acceptance. Among his most well-known works are Owen, Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse, and Chrysanthemum. In addition to his picture books, Henkes has written novels for middle-grade readers, including Olive’s Ocean and The Year of Billy Miller.
His books have received recognition from several literary organisations. Owen was awarded a Caldecott Honor, and Olive’s Ocean was named a Newbery Honor Book. Henkes’s work is published by Greenwillow Books, an imprint of HarperCollins.
In 2014, The Year of Billy Miller was named a Newbery Honor Book.
