Kereen Getten is a children’s author originally from Jamaica. She moved to the United Kingdom as a child. Getten’s writing often draws on her experiences of growing up in Jamaica and her stories frequently explore themes of family, friendship, and identity.
Her debut novel, When Life Gives You Mangoes, was published by Pushkin Children’s Books in 2020. The book follows the story of a young girl named Clara living in a small Jamaican village, and it has been recognised for its vivid sense of place and character development. Getten’s second novel, If You Read This, was published by Pushkin Children’s Books in 2022. This book centres on a girl named Brie who embarks on a treasure hunt left by her late mother.
In addition to her novels, Getten has contributed to anthologies and has written for younger readers. Her book Two Sisters, A Story from Jamaica was published by Barrington Stoke in 2023. Getten’s work has been shortlisted for several awards, including the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and the Jhalak Children’s & YA Prize.
