Kenneth Grahame biography

Kenneth Grahame was a Scottish author best known for his classic children’s novel The Wind in the Willows. He was born in Edinburgh and educated at St Edward’s School, Oxford. Grahame began his professional life at the Bank of England, where he eventually became Secretary.

Grahame’s early literary work appeared in periodicals such as The Yellow Book and The National Observer. His first book, Pagan Papers, was published in 1893, followed by The Golden Age in 1895 and Dream Days in 1898. These collections featured stories reflecting on childhood and imagination.

The Wind in the Willows was published in 1908 by Methuen. The novel features characters such as Mole, Rat, Toad, and Badger, and has remained in print since its first publication. The book has been adapted for stage, film, and television numerous times.

Grahame retired from the Bank of England in 1908, the same year The Wind in the Willows was published. In 1924, he received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of Oxford. Grahame’s work continues to be recognised for its influence on children’s literature.

He died in 1932. The Wind in the Willows remains his most celebrated work and is regarded as a classic of English literature.
