Kate Grenville biography

Kate Grenville is an Australian fiction writer. Her novels include Lilian’s Story, Dark Places, The Idea of Perfection and Albion’s Story. The Idea of Perfection won the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2001. Albion’s Story was a finalist for the Miles Franklin Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for fiction.

The Secret River was published in 2005. The novel follows William Thornhill, who is transported from London to New South Wales and later claims land by the Hawkesbury River. The Secret River was awarded the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and was shortlisted for both the Miles Franklin Literary Award and the Man Booker Prize.

Searching for the Secret River: The Story Behind the Bestselling Novel was published in 2006. The book explains how Grenville’s research into family history and Australian history developed into the writing of The Secret River.
