Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Julie Flett is a Cree-Métis author, illustrator, and artist known for her contributions to children’s literature. She has written and illustrated numerous picture books that often reflect Indigenous themes and languages. Flett’s works include Birdsong (2019), We All Play (2021), Wild Berries (2013), and My Heart Fills with Happiness (2016), written by Monique Gray Smith and illustrated by Flett.
Her illustrations have appeared in books such as When We Were Alone by David A. Robertson, which won the 2017 Governor General’s Literary Award for Young People’s Literature – Illustrated Books. Flett’s book Birdsong received the 2020 TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award and was named a Boston Globe–Horn Book Honor Book. She has also been awarded the 2021 Governor General’s Literary Award for Young People’s Literature – Illustrated Books for On the Trapline, written by David A. Robertson and illustrated by Flett.
Flett’s work has been recognised with multiple accolades, including the American Indian Youth Literature Award and the Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Canadian Picture Book Award. Her books have been published by House of Anansi Press, Greystone Books, and Orca Book Publishers. In 2022, On the Trapline was named a Boston Globe–Horn Book Award Honor Book.
Julie Flett’s illustrations and stories frequently incorporate Cree and Michif words, supporting the preservation and celebration of Indigenous languages. Her book We All Play was longlisted for the 2021 National Book Award for Young People’s Literature. Flett’s work continues to receive recognition for its artistic merit and cultural significance.
