Jules Verne was a French author known for his pioneering works in science fiction and adventure literature. He was born in Nantes, France, and began his literary career writing plays and librettos before turning to novels. Verne’s first major success came with the publication of Cinq semaines en ballon (Five Weeks in a Balloon) in 1863, which marked the beginning of his celebrated series Voyages extraordinaires published by Pierre-Jules Hetzel.
Among his most notable works are Voyage au centre de la Terre (Journey to the Centre of the Earth, 1864), Vingt mille lieues sous les mers (Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas, 1870), and Le tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours (Around the World in Eighty Days, 1873). These novels combined adventure with scientific and geographical detail, influencing the development of modern science fiction.
Verne’s books have been translated into numerous languages and adapted for stage, film, and television. His works have been published by Hetzel and later by various international publishers. In 1884, he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour in France. Verne’s influence extends across literature, science, and popular culture, with his novels remaining in print worldwide. Le tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours was first serialised in 1872 before its book publication in 1873.
Jules Verne died in 1905. His final novels, including L’Invasion de la mer (Invasion of the Sea), were published posthumously.
