Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Judy Blume is an American author known for her work in children’s and young adult fiction. She published her first book, The One in the Middle Is the Green Kangaroo, in 1969. Blume gained widespread recognition with titles such as Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. (1970), Blubber (1974), Forever… (1975), and Deenie (1973). Her books often address themes relevant to children and adolescents, including family, friendship, and growing up.
Blume’s novels have been translated into over 30 languages and have sold more than 85 million copies worldwide. She has received numerous literary awards, including the Margaret A. Edwards Award from the American Library Association in 1996 for her significant and lasting contribution to young adult literature. In 2004, she was awarded the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.
Her work has also been adapted for film and television, including the 2023 film adaptation of Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. Blume has served on the boards of the National Coalition Against Censorship and the Authors Guild. In 2015, she published the adult novel In the Unlikely Event. Her books remain widely read and frequently appear on lists of most challenged books in the United States.
Judy Blume received the 2023 PEN America Literary Service Award.
