Jonathan King biography

Jonathan King is a New Zealand film-maker and comic creator whose work spans cinema and children’s publishing. He wrote and directed the feature films Black Sheep and Under the Mountain, the latter a screen adaptation of Maurice Gee’s classic children’s novel. He also co-wrote and co-produced Under the Mountain.

King’s first children’s book is the graphic novel The Inkberg Enigma (Gecko Press, 2020), which he wrote and illustrated. A mystery adventure for readers aged roughly eight to twelve, it follows two friends who uncover the hidden history of their seaside town.

His comics have appeared in anthologies and online, and he continues to work across illustration, writing and film. The Inkberg Enigma is published in multiple territories and is used in schools and libraries as a fast-paced, visual route into reading for middle-grade audiences.

The Inkberg Enigma was shortlisted for the 2021 New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults (Esther Glen Junior Fiction and Best First Book) and selected as a White Raven by the International Youth Library in 2021.
