John Vernon Lord is a British author, illustrator, and teacher, known for his work in children’s literature and illustration. He has illustrated a range of books, including classic texts and original stories. Lord studied at Salford School of Art and later at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. He has worked extensively as an illustrator, producing artwork for books, magazines, and advertising.
Among his notable works are his illustrations for Aesop’s Fables, The Nonsense Verse of Edward Lear, and The Hunting of the Snark by Lewis Carroll. He has also written and illustrated his own books, such as The Giant Jam Sandwich, first published in 1972, which has become a well-known picture book for children.
In addition to his work as an author and illustrator, John Vernon Lord has had a significant career in education. He served as Professor of Illustration at the University of Brighton, where he contributed to the development of illustration as an academic discipline.
Lord’s illustration for The Hunting of the Snark was published by Artists’ Choice Editions in 2006.
