John Stephens biography

John Stephens is a writer and television producer whose children’s fiction includes the fantasy trilogy The Books of Beginning. Before publishing his first novel, he spent a decade working in television, including as a writer on Gilmore Girls, a producer on The O.C. and an executive producer of Gossip Girl. He later served as an executive producer of Gotham. Stephens holds an MFA from the University of Virginia.

The Emerald Atlas, his debut novel, introduced siblings Kate, Michael and Emma, who discover an old book that draws them into a struggle involving magic, time travel and a prophecy connected with three powerful books. It was followed by The Fire Chronicle and The Black Reckoning, which completed the trilogy.

Stephens returned to fiction for older readers with the YA historical mystery The Age of Fury. Set in New York City in 1907, it follows seventeen-year-old Caitlin Quinn, who travels from Ireland after receiving a letter from her twin sister Mary and discovers that Mary has been murdered. Her investigation brings her together with William Furey, a young gangster pursuing the same case.

The Age of Fury is published in the UK by Hot Key Books and is scheduled for publication on 20 October 2026.
