Jamila Gavin is a British author known for her contributions to children’s and young adult literature. Born in Mussoorie, India, she moved to England at the age of 11. Gavin’s multicultural background often influences her writing, which explores themes of cultural diversity and identity.
Her debut novel, The Magic Orange Tree and Other Stories, was published in 1979. She gained significant recognition with her novel Coram Boy, published in 2000. This book, set in 18th-century England, tells the story of orphans and foundlings and was shortlisted for the prestigious Whitbread Children’s Book Award. It later won the Whitbread Children’s Book Award in 2000.
Gavin’s work often addresses complex themes suitable for young readers, and she has written numerous books, including The Wheel of Surya trilogy, which includes The Wheel of Surya (1992), The Eye of the Horse (1994), and The Track of the Wind (1997). These novels explore the experiences of an Indian family during and after the partition of India.
In addition to her novels, Gavin has written short stories and picture books. Her book Grandpa Chatterji was adapted into a television series by the BBC. She has also contributed to anthologies and collections, showcasing her versatility as a writer.
Jamila Gavin’s work has been recognised with several awards and nominations, highlighting her impact on children’s literature. Her ability to weave intricate narratives with historical and cultural depth has earned her a respected place in the literary community. In 2007, Coram Boy was adapted into a stage play by the National Theatre.
