James Walvin biography

James Walvin is a historian who taught for many years at the University of York and is Professor of History Emeritus there. His published work focuses widely on slavery and the slave trade, and his book Black and White won the Martin Luther King Memorial Prize.

His books include Sugar: The World Corrupted from Slavery to Obesity, which examines the history of sugar from its production by enslaved plantation workers to its modern association with health concerns. The audiobook edition of Sugar was published by Random House Audio on 3 April 2018 and runs for 10 hours 45 minutes.

Walvin wrote Making the Black Atlantic: Britain and the African Diaspora, a study of Britain’s role in the African diaspora, Atlantic slavery, colonial settlement in the Caribbean and North America, and the campaign to end slavery. Bloomsbury Academic published Making the Black Atlantic in hardback on 6 October 2016 as part of The Transatlantic Slave Trade: Bloomsbury Academic Collections series.
