James Patterson biography

James Patterson is an American author known for his prolific output in children’s, young adult, and adult fiction. He is the creator of several bestselling series, including the Alex Cross, Women’s Murder Club, and Maximum Ride books. Patterson’s first novel, The Thomas Berryman Number, was published in 1976 and won the Edgar Award for Best First Novel by an American Author.

In children’s and young adult literature, Patterson has written the Maximum Ride series, beginning with The Angel Experiment in 2005, and the Middle School series, starting with Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life in 2011. He is also the author of the I Funny and Treasure Hunters series, both co-written with Chris Grabenstein. Patterson’s Dog Diaries series, co-authored with Steven Butler, is published by Penguin Random House.

Patterson has collaborated with a range of co-authors, including Maxine Paetro, Chris Tebbetts, and Ned Rust. His books have been published in over 100 countries and translated into dozens of languages. According to his official website and publisher, Patterson has sold more than 400 million copies of his books worldwide.

He has received several awards, including the National Book Foundation’s Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community in 2015. In 2019, he was awarded the National Humanities Medal by the President of the United States for his contributions to literature and literacy advocacy.

Patterson established the James Patterson Pageturner Awards in 2005 to promote the joy of reading. He has also funded scholarships and donated millions to independent bookshops and school libraries. In 2023, Patterson published Middle School: Winter Blunderland and Dog Diaries: Dinosaur Disaster.
