Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Holly Bourne is a British author known for her young adult and contemporary fiction. She studied at the University of Sheffield and worked as a journalist and editor before becoming a full-time writer. Bourne’s debut novel, Soulmates, was published by Usborne in 2013. She is recognised for her Spinster Club series, which includes Am I Normal Yet? (2015), How Hard Can Love Be? (2016), and What’s a Girl Gotta Do? (2016). The series addresses themes such as feminism and mental health.
Bourne’s standalone novels include It Only Happens in the Movies (2017), Are We All Lemmings & Snowflakes? (2018), and The Places I’ve Cried in Public (2019). She has also written for adults, with titles such as How Do You Like Me Now? (2018) and Girl Friends (2022), both published by Hodder & Stoughton.
Her work has received several accolades. Am I Normal Yet? was shortlisted for the 2016 YA Book Prize and the 2016 Carnegie Medal. It Only Happens in the Movies was shortlisted for the 2018 YA Book Prize. Bourne was selected as a World Book Day author in 2017. Her books have been translated into multiple languages and are published internationally.
In 2023, Bourne published You Could Be So Pretty with Usborne. Her writing is published by Usborne and Hodder & Stoughton.
