Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Helen Cooper is a British author and illustrator known for her work in children’s literature. She has written and illustrated several picture books, with her most notable titles including Pumpkin Soup (1998), The Baby Who Wouldn’t Go to Bed (1996), and The Bear Under the Stairs (1993). Cooper’s books are published by major publishers such as Doubleday and Corgi Books.
Cooper has received significant recognition for her work. She won the Kate Greenaway Medal twice, first in 1996 for The Baby Who Wouldn’t Go to Bed and again in 1998 for Pumpkin Soup. The Kate Greenaway Medal is awarded annually by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals for distinguished illustration in a book for children.
Her book Pumpkin Soup was also shortlisted for the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize. Cooper has illustrated books for other authors, including Sandmare by Helen Cresswell, which was shortlisted for the Whitbread Children’s Book Award in 2001.
In addition to her picture books, Cooper has written and illustrated novels for older children, such as The Hippo at the End of the Hall (2017), published by David Fickling Books.
Helen Cooper’s work has been translated into several languages and is held in libraries worldwide. She remains recognised for her contributions to children’s literature, particularly for her achievements in illustration.
