Herbert George Wells, known as H.G. Wells, was an English writer recognised for his contributions to science fiction and social commentary. He studied biology under Thomas Henry Huxley at the Normal School of Science in London. Wells published his first novel, The Time Machine, in 1895, introducing the concept of time travel using a machine. This was followed by The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897), and The War of the Worlds (1898), all of which have remained in print since their initial publication.
Wells wrote extensively for both adults and younger readers. His works include The First Men in the Moon (1901) and The War in the Air (1908). He also published non-fiction, including The Outline of History (1920). Wells’s books have been translated into numerous languages and adapted for radio, film, and television.
He received an honorary doctorate from the University of London in 1901. In 1946, the Library of Congress named Wells among the “Books That Shaped America” for The War of the Worlds. His influence on science fiction and popular culture remains widely acknowledged. Wells died in 1946.
