Giles Andreae is a British author and poet, known for his work in children’s literature. He created the character Purple Ronnie, which first appeared in the 1980s and became widely recognised through greeting cards and merchandise. Andreae is also the creator of the character Edward Monkton.
He has written numerous picture books for children, often collaborating with illustrators such as Guy Parker-Rees. Notable titles include Giraffes Can’t Dance (1999), Rumble in the Jungle (1998), Commotion in the Ocean (1998), and Be Brave, Little Penguin (2017). His books have been published by Orchard Books and Hachette Children’s Group.
Andreae’s work has received several accolades. Giraffes Can’t Dance won the Sheffield Book Award and the Dundee Children’s Book Award. His book The Lion Who Wanted to Love won the Red House Children’s Book Award in 1998.
In addition to his writing, Andreae has contributed poetry and verse to a range of anthologies and collections. His books have been translated into multiple languages and are widely used in schools and libraries.
In 2017, Giraffes Can’t Dance was adapted into a stage production by Tall Stories Theatre Company.
