Gemma Koomen biography

Gemma Koomen is an artist and illustrator who works in gouache and ink. Her paintings and illustrations take inspiration from the natural world, with recurring subjects including wildflowers, plants, small people in big places, conversational animals, thoughtful objects and tiny homes.

Koomen wrote and illustrated The Tree Keepers: Flock, a 40-page picture book about Sylvia, a tiny Tree Keeper who finds a baby bird in her hiding place and learns about friendship and sharing. The book was published on 15 June 2019.

She illustrated All Together Now: Create 50 Moments of Family Joy, written by Hannah Dove. The book presents 50 family activities designed for home, the backyard or a local area, with each activity encouraging shared time, practical skills and family memories.

Koomen wrote Painting Nature: Techniques, Tutorials and Projects, a 176-page art book published by Quadrille on 12 June 2025. The book contains 20 nature-based projects for beginner and intermediate artists, organised around seasonal themes including spring flowers, sea views, autumn leaves, snowflakes and a fox in the moonlight.
