Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Gavin Maxwell was a Scottish naturalist and author. He studied at Oxford University and served in the Special Operations Executive during the Second World War before turning to writing.
Maxwell is best known for Ring of Bright Water (1960), which recounts his life with otters on the west coast of Scotland. The book was adapted into a film in 1969 and is considered a classic of nature writing. He also wrote travel books, including God Protect Me From My Friends (1956) about his time in Iraq, and A Reed Shaken by the Wind (1957), documenting life in the marshes of southern Iraq.
Ring of Bright Water won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize in 1960.
