Ester Gaya is a Spanish palaeobotanist and researcher. She studied biology at the University of Barcelona and completed her doctoral work on fossil fungi and lichens. She has held research positions at institutions including the Natural History Museum in London and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
Her work focuses on the evolutionary history of fungi and lichens, combining palaeontology with molecular biology to investigate biodiversity over geological timescales. Gaya has published in peer-reviewed journals and contributed to scientific collections and exhibitions.
She was awarded a Future Leader Fellowship from UK Research and Innovation in 2018 to support her research on fungal evolution.
