Emily Brontë was an English novelist and poet, best known for her only novel, Wuthering Heights, published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell. She was born into the Brontë family, which included her sisters Charlotte and Anne Brontë, both also published authors. Emily Brontë contributed poems to the 1846 collection Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell, which she co-authored with her sisters. The collection was published under pseudonyms to conceal their gender.
Wuthering Heights was published by Thomas Cautley Newby in December 1847. The novel is now regarded as a classic of English literature. During her lifetime, Emily Brontë’s work did not receive significant literary awards, as such recognition was uncommon for women writers in the mid-19th century. Her poetry and novel have since been widely studied and adapted.
Emily Brontë died in 1848. Wuthering Heights remains her only published novel.
