Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Efua Traoré is a Nigerian-German author known for her contributions to children’s and young adult literature. She grew up in Nigeria and has lived in several countries, including France and Germany. Traoré writes primarily in English.
Her debut novel, Children of the Quicksands, was published by Chicken House in 2021. The book draws on Yoruba mythology and is set in a Nigerian village. Children of the Quicksands was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize in 2022 and won the Times/Chicken House Children’s Fiction Competition in 2019.
Traoré’s second novel, Wildlings, was published by Chicken House in 2022. The story explores themes of family, nature, and belonging, and is also set in Nigeria.
In addition to her novels, Traoré has written short stories and contributed to anthologies. She was a finalist for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize in 2018.
Efua Traoré’s Children of the Quicksands was selected as a Notable Book for a Global Society by the International Literacy Association in 2022.
