E.B. White, born Elwyn Brooks White, was an American writer known for his contributions to children’s literature and essays. He attended Cornell University and later worked for The New Yorker magazine, where he contributed essays and editorials.
White authored several notable children’s books, including Stuart Little (published in 1945), Charlotte’s Web (1952), and The Trumpet of the Swan (1970). Charlotte’s Web received a Newbery Honor in 1953 and was named a Newbery Honor Book by the American Library Association. Stuart Little was White’s first children’s novel and has remained in print since its publication.
In addition to his children’s books, White co-authored the influential writing guide The Elements of Style with William Strunk Jr., which has been widely used in English language instruction. White received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963 and the Pulitzer Prize Special Citation in 1978 for his body of work.
White’s books have been translated into multiple languages and adapted for film, stage, and television. Charlotte’s Web was named the top children’s novel in a 2012 survey published by the School Library Journal. White died in 1985.
