Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock is a British space scientist and science communicator. She holds a BSc in Physics and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College London. Aderin-Pocock has worked on a range of scientific projects, including the development of instruments for the Gemini Telescope in Chile and the observation instruments for the James Webb Space Telescope.
She is known for her work in science communication, particularly as a presenter of the BBC television programme The Sky at Night. Aderin-Pocock has authored several children’s books, including Dr Maggie’s Grand Tour of the Solar System (2019) and Am I Made of Stardust?: Dr Maggie Answers the Big Questions for Young Scientists (2022), both published by Buster Books.
Aderin-Pocock has received multiple honours for her contributions to science and education. She was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2009 for services to science education. In 2020, she was awarded the Institute of Physics William Thomson, Lord Kelvin Medal and Prize for public engagement in physics.
In 2023, a Barbie doll was created in her likeness as part of the Barbie Role Models series, recognising her impact as a role model in science.
