Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Dianne Hofmeyr is a South African-born author known for her children’s and young adult books. She has written picture books, novels, and retellings of myths and legends. Hofmeyr’s works often draw on African history and folklore. Her books have been published by major publishers including Frances Lincoln and Otter-Barry Books.
Her novel Fish Notes and Star Songs won the M-Net Book Prize. The Waterbearer was shortlisted for the Smarties Book Prize. Hofmeyr’s picture book Zeraffa Giraffa, illustrated by Jane Ray, was shortlisted for the English Association Picture Book Award and the Kate Greenaway Medal. Other notable titles include My Daddy is a Silly Monkey, My Daddy is a Pretzel, and Fiddle Dee Dee.
Hofmeyr’s books have been translated into several languages. She has contributed to anthologies and has written for both educational and trade publishers. Her work has received recognition in the UK and internationally. In 2014, Zeraffa Giraffa was adapted for the stage by Little Angel Theatre in London.
Her recent publications include Paris Cat (2020), illustrated by Piet Grobler, and Tiger Walk (2018), illustrated by Jesse Hodgson. Hofmeyr’s writing continues to be recognised for its engagement with history and culture. Paris Cat was longlisted for the UK Literacy Association Book Award in 2021.
